Origami Team Blog

It's the holidays and I've been a bad boy

Yes, you read correctly. I've been a bad boy lately.

I haven't been active enough on the community site. My team hasn't blogged in a long while. We haven't had any recent contests (although Emily did do that postcard contest that no one entered!). I've watched you all struggle getting Windows Vista running properly on your UMPCs, don't worry we do too! We've even been keeping secrets from "the devoted" (all you UMPC enthusiasts). But alas, all will be explained on January 8th. All I can say is to expect an all new experience. It's the best product work my team has ever done!

On a different note, I want to express my thanks and gratitude to the community members for the support the forums are providing to UMPC users all over the world. It is truly amazing to watch people from all walks of life reach out to help each other. I knew when I came up with the idea for this website that the earliest adopters of UMPCs would want a place to go to meet other users, to share information, to learn how to resolve and work around problems, and to hear directly from the development team at Microsoft rather than just getting fed the standard marketing talk. The site has been much better received and active than I had even hoped. We average around 30,000 site visits a day and get anywhere from 5-10 new community members a day. As awarenss of UMPC grows and more hardware and software comes to the market I expect the site to get even stronger and more vibrant than it already is.

As I think back over the past year, a lot has happened since our "Origami" launch in March. We've seen Samsung deliver multiple versions of their Q1 device to the market. We've watch Tablet Kiosk release their original 7100 series and more recently their 7200 series units. Most recently we've finally seen the ASUS R2H be available to so many customers that waited patiently for it. Now we're seeing extended batteries, new accessories like car docks, GPS pucks, wireless keyboards, etc. ISVs are getting into the game too like Slingbox making a customized player for UMPCs, Streets & Trips (Autoroute) 2007 offers a UMPC full screen nav mode, even the New York Times Reader has also been designed to work well on a UMPC. In the coming year we'll see new hardware manufactures enter the market, new designs that offer built in keyboard functionality, and even the reality of "always connected" with integrated 3G access. As exciting as the past 9 months have been the coming year I think will really mark the arrival of UMPC as a mainstream product that is here to stay.

In closing I just want to thank the UMPC followers for their ongoing support of the UMPC technology and the Origamiproject.com site. I want to thank the community members for keeping the forums alive and thank my own team for working so relentlessly to build products that will continue fueling the UMPC phenomenon. My enitre team will be at CES in January. If you are there, please come by the booth and say hi to us. We'll be in the Windows Vista mobility section and would love to meet you.

Wishing you all a happy holidays,

Dustin

Hey Dustin, thanx for the kind words.

One addition you could have made was also that iGuidance's iNavigation version 3.0, which sadly debuted the North America only releases, also has an excellent UMPC-specific install and screen. (But you woik fuh Moicrosoft, so we knows why!)
;-)

Merry Thingy!

Dustin & team: regardless of the slow adoption by the masses, the UMPC debut in 2006 marks the start of a true paradigm shift in mobile computing. You folks should be proud of the achievements....every long journey starts with the first step and that's what 2006 was for Origami Project. Looking forward the rest of the journey with you guys & I'll swing by at CES. Would love to meet the team! Enjoy the holidays.

Good point Woadan, just an oversight on my part. I don't mind plugging 3rd party products, even if they do compete with MS products. iNavigation is very good on a UMPC as well.

Dustin, before you go off saying that you've been a bad boy, no forum posts, etc.  I  would like to thank you and the rest of the team for creating a device which has been so pivotal to my computing use as a student, and also to have created a device which so many people have come to love (or hate) and to spend so much time analyzing, modifying, and down right enjoying.  You mention how this site is becoming a success, but the site's success is only due to the fact that so many people are interested in the device which you helped to create.  So for that I'd like to extend my gratitude to you and the rest of the team.

Thank you!

As long as you're working on DialKeys and TouchPak for Vista, we forgive you. ;)

Will you have team members at CES? Hope to meet some of you.

I did enter the postcard contest! I even talked my partner into sending one postcard too, so you should have at least two participants.

(The secret thing is of course support for Swedish handwriting. And if it is, you are more than forgiven. ;) )

Dustin, I think the UMPC form factor needs an accurate input method. Resistive touch screens work but are not accurate. A pen with an active digitizer would be most effective. I can see a number of software applications that would move units if the form factor is pen enabled.

Are there plans to add pen input functionality to the UMPC form factor?

I'm very excited to see what you guys have been working on. Luckily for me i wont be able to afford a UMPC until at least mid January so maybe whatever new things you guys debut in January will be something that I can adopt early on. I'd have adopted the UMPC earlier on, but the last 3 times I was driving to Best Buy to buy one, my car broke. Everytime I have enough money, my car breaks.
I dont think my car likes me much.

OOOPS!!!  What was I thinking?  Sorry.  I started back to work today, but apparently my brain is still on holiday.  Please ignore the previous post until MONDAY.

I am sure looking forward to it.

Maybe you could give us a sneek peak?

Again, apologies.

About Dustin

I've been at Microsoft for 9 years and I interned here for 3 years in college, so basically I've been around for a while. My technical background is in application development, web development, database design and to a lesser extent networking. I've been managing teams at Microsoft for over 8 years now in various capacities. I love software, technology, marketing and business so I tend to dabble in a lot of areas. In my spare time I hang out with my awesome wife and two young boys. When I'm not golfing that is :)
